It's about the discovery of the first fossils of "Homo florsiensis" in 2003, which were discovered in the limestone cave "Ling Bua" on the Indonesian island of Flores. The "Homo florsiensis" is an extinct, small-bodied species of the genus "Homo" and are therefore colloquially called "The Hobbits". It was determined that the bones are not younger than 60,000 years old. How closely the relationship of "Homo florsiensis" with other species of the genus "Homo" is disputed. Homo floresiensis was already derived from "Homo erectus" by its discoverers in 2004 as a so-called "island dwarf". Other researchers suspected that it could have been a modified population of "Homo sapiens" (man). However, recent findings "suggest that Homo floresiensis was a clearly distinguishable species."

Archeologists Morwood and Soejono are amazed at the find in Illo 1, with the excavation team and cave in the background. The second Illo shows the fight of a group of "hobbits" with several Komodo dragons.

Es geht um die Entdeckung der ersten Fossilien der "Homo florsiensis" im Jahre 2003, die in der Kalkstein-Höhle "Ling Bua" auf der indonesischen Insel Flores entdeckt worden sind. Die "Homo florsiensis" ist eine ausgestorbene, kleinwüchsige Art der Gattung "Homo" und werden deshalb auch umgangssprachlich "Die Hobbits" genannt. Es wurde festgestellt, dass die Knochen nicht jünger als 60.000 Jahre alt sind. Wie eng die Verwandtschaft der "Homo florsiensis" mit anderen Arten der Gattung "Homo" ist umstritten. Von seinen Entdeckern wurde Homo floresiensis bereits 2004 als so genannte "Inselverzwergung" vom "Homo erectus" abgeleitet. Andere Forscher vermuteten, es könne sich um eine veränderte Population der "Homo sapiens" (des Menschen) gehandelt haben. Die jüngsten Befunde „deuten jedoch darauf hin, dass Homo floresiensis eine klar unterscheidbare Art“ war.

Die Archeologen Morwood und Soejono sind in Illu 1 erstaunt über den Fund, im Hintergrund das Grabungsteam und die Höhle. Die zweite Illu zeigt den Kampf einer Gruppe "Hobbits" mit mehreren Komodowaranen.
